William is a specialist in religion and politics in Britain in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and has written more than a dozen books and fifty articles on these topics. William is best-known for ‘Britain 1660-1851’ for the ‘Brief History of Britain’ series, published by Constable Robinson in 2013. He has held visiting fellowships at Yale and Columbia Universities in the USA. William began his career as a schoolteacher before teaching in further education. He has also been an inspector for the further education sector, including working for OFSTED. He edits two academic journals and is a fellow of the Royal Historical Society and of the Royal Society of Arts.
