Recently retired politics teacher
Bradford University
Tom Gallagher campaigned for the devolution of power from Westminster to Edinburgh in the 1980s. He believes that the Scottish National Party is committed to a Caledonian version of the centralized Westminster system confined to Scotland in which citizens will be effectively disempowered. He welcomes the growth in interest in Scottish issues across the UK but hopes that the English will beware simplistic answers that could possibly backfire on them. He has written 3 books on Scotland, the most recent The Illusion of Freedom: Scotland Under Nationalism (Hurst , London 2009), as well as books on the Balkans. He currently lives in Edinburgh.
