    Professor of Early Modern History

    University of Sheffield

    Phil is a social and cultural historian of Britain between the 16th and 18th centuries. He has published on the history of citizenship, popular politics, urbanization, manners, and language, and is currently running a large collaborative research project on intoxicants and intoxication in the early modern era. He is also writing a book on the social history of the English Renaissance for Princeton University Press.
