Peter is a reader and director of postgraduate programmes in the School of Computing Science of Newcastle University. His area of research is complex systems, and in particular the emergent dynamic behaviour of biological neural networks and object interaction networks in large-scale software. He also works on applications of computational intelligence methods. He is member of council of Newcastle University and has been member of the senate. He is also active in the public life, being a local councillor for North Jesmond ward in Newcastle City Council and having been a candidate for the Northumbria police & crime commissioner in 2012 and for the Parliament in Washington & Sunderland West in 2010. He also has been involved in the setting up of three university spin-out companies, one of which, e-Therapeutics Plc, is listed at the London Stock Exchange.
