Matthew created his tour company, Exploring York, in 2004, out of a love for his native county of Yorkshire and his lifelong passion for travel.
He says the reason we embark on journeys is the unknown and to discover things that were previously outside our realms of imagination and this is true of life.
Matthew has a keen interest in all aspects of history, British and American politics and world affairs.
A chance meeting, with somebody who ran a charity and has since become a good friend, led to Matthew visiting Rwanda and seeing the real Gorillas in the Mist. That trip also fed Matthew’s appetite for learning about war and atrocities and how humanity can endure and overcome. This passion has led to him taking self-study trips (what he calls holidays) to Bosnia, Serbia, Israel, Cambodia and Vietnam.
However, the trip that he feels most lucky to have taken was to Aleppo in Syria in December 2009, 18 months before the start of the horrors that lie in wait for that beautiful country.
