Chestnut Grove Academy
45 Chestnut Grove Balham London SW12 8JZ
Chestnut Grove is a high performing 11-19 mixed comprehensive in Balham, on the boundaries between Wandsworth and Lambeth. The school was judged Outstanding by Ofsted in March 2008, and, in July 2011, we took the opportunity to build on our independent spirit to ‘convert’ to academy status.
The school has an excellent track record of examination results both at GCSE and A level. In 2011, 98% of Year 11 students gained 5+ A*-C GCSE grades, with 65% achieving this with English and Maths. The school takes great pride in the exceptional progress made by students of all abilities as they go through the school; in 2011, this ranked Chestnut Grove 7th in the whole country.
Chestnut Grove’s strength lies in the way it successfully marries tradition with innovation. The emphasis on academic rigour in the curriculum not only trains students to do well in examinations, but to develop independent learning habits which will stand them in good stead at university and beyond.
The school’s reputation for the Arts is well known in the local community. The visual arts, music, dance and drama are all excellent, and provide young people with a myriad of opportunities, including a Foundation Art Degree in the Sixth Form.
The atmosphere of Chestnut Grove is very special and always commented on by visitors. It exudes energy, enthusiasm and vitality. Very often, the sound of music filters through its corridors, and always, the displays tell of our students’ achievements – academic, sporting or artistic.
