Debating Matters has encouraged me to question the way I think, not only in intellectual environments, but in everyday life.

BA Philosophy, King's College London

Debating Matters genuinely encourages free speech, a doctrine which I am also particularly passionate about. As well as contributing to how we shape the world around us, the power of debate is intrinsically valuable in itself and is an important device for developing the ways in which we think. This, I believe, Debating Matters strongly supports through a competition which encourages debating for the sake of challenging and learning, not just winning.

I became involved with Debating Matters in my final years at school and was drawn to the collegiate nature of the competition. When I was at school what I enjoyed about Debating Matters was the way in which everyone was able to voice their opinions, be treated with respect and able to speak without fear of judgement. Through becoming an alumnus of the competition I have luckily been given the opportunity to continue my involvement in this environment, which is a rewarding experience that I sincerely value.

I have been able to enjoy meeting, discussing and debating with a group of people who are all committed to the ideals of education, free speech and discussion and I feel I might not otherwise have had the opportunity to meet up with these colleagues in such a relaxed environment. Whether it’s having a lively debate in the back of a car on the way back from one of the Debating Matters rounds about whether Art is more important than Philosophy, or discussing expats in Costa Del Sol over a pint in a pub, Debating Matters has encouraged me to question the way I think, not only in intellectual environments, but in everyday life. Certainly, being notoriously stubborn previously, becoming an alumnus of Debating Matters has taught me that sometimes other people have more convincing and structured arguments than my own!

I would thoroughly recommend becoming involved with Debating Matters without any hesitation. It is a forward-thinking, progressive competition which is exactly what is needed for young people today.
